Shipping from Dubai
to New Zealand.
We ship from Dubai and from anywhere in the UAE to New Zealand by sea and by air. We carry business and personal cargo. Two things decide this lane and neither is the sailing: your buyer needs a customs client code, and biosecurity work sometimes has to be done in Dubai before the goods leave.
Overview
Sea and air freight
to New Zealand.
Shipping from Dubai to New Zealand takes about 22 to 30 days by sea, and 1 to 7 days by air. A current logistics source quotes 22 to 28 days from Jebel Ali to Auckland and 24 to 30 days to Tauranga. Auckland serves the upper North Island. Tauranga is a major container gateway with extensive inland connections into the central North Island. Lyttelton is the primary gateway for Christchurch and the South Island, and Wellington serves the lower North Island. Air cargo flies into Auckland or Christchurch. Before shipping, your buyer needs a New Zealand Customs client code for commercial imports of a thousand dollars or more, and for motor vehicles regardless of value. We deliver everywhere, including Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga, Dunedin, Napier and Queenstown. Navo Shipping handles the sea freight, air freight and customs clearance on the Dubai to New Zealand route, door to door.

Ports and gateways
Sea ports and airports
we ship to from Dubai.
Every bill of lading carries two ports: where the cargo loads, and where it discharges. We load at Jebel Ali or another UAE port. New Zealand has four sea ports we use and two airports. They suit different cargo and different inland legs, so the loading port and the discharge port are worth choosing separately.
POLPort of loading
We collect anywhere in the UAE, free zones included, and load at whichever of these eight suits the cargo.

PODPort of discharge
The right one is whichever leaves the shortest inland leg to your delivery address. On a long lane that leg is a shipment in its own right, so it is planned rather than assumed.

How cargo reaches Port of Auckland
Shipping from Dubai to Auckland runs about 22 to 28 days on current commercial lane information, which is quick for the distance. It is a main gateway and sits in the country’s largest urban market. Sea freight is priced per container on a full load and per cubic metre on a shared one. How cargo reaches Port of Tauranga
Shipping from Dubai to Tauranga can use a confirmed suitable vessel booking, normally relayed through a Southeast Asian or Australian hub rather than sailed direct. It is New Zealand's largest container port, so service choice is widest here. Biosecurity inspects on arrival and can hold cargo after customs clears it. Times vary from ship to ship, so we confirm the days when we quote. Auckland is the alternative. The quote separates ocean freight, transshipment, terminal handling, customs, biosecurity and final delivery charges. How cargo reaches Port of Lyttelton
Shipping from Dubai to Lyttelton can use a confirmed suitable vessel booking, normally relayed through a Southeast Asian or Australian hub rather than sailed direct. It is the South Island's main container port and serves Christchurch through the road tunnel. Times vary from ship to ship, so we confirm the days when we quote. Tauranga is the alternative for the North Island. The quote separates ocean freight, transshipment, terminal handling, customs, biosecurity and final delivery charges. How cargo reaches Port of Wellington
Shipping from Dubai to Wellington takes fewer container services than the larger ports, so acceptance is confirmed before we quote rather than assumed. It suits cargo delivering around the capital and across the Cook Strait. Times vary from ship to ship, so we confirm the days when we quote. Tauranga is the alternative for wider service choice. The quote separates ocean freight, transshipment, terminal handling, customs, biosecurity and final delivery charges. How cargo reaches Auckland Airport
Air freight from Dubai to Auckland Airport can use accepted belly or freighter capacity, with the routing confirmed live, subject to commodity, space, screening and local cargo handling approval. It handles most of New Zealand's air cargo. Biosecurity here is strict and is the step that most often adds a day. Times vary from flight to flight, so we confirm the days when we quote. Christchurch is the alternative. The quote separates uplift, connection, screening, terminal, customs, biosecurity and final delivery charges. How cargo reaches Christchurch Airport
Air freight from Dubai to Christchurch Airport can use accepted connecting capacity, subject to commodity, space, screening and local cargo handling approval. Landing here serves the South Island directly and avoids the domestic leg down from Auckland. Times vary from flight to flight, so we confirm the days when we quote. Before you ship
Import rules
for New Zealand.
Two things decide this lane and neither is the shipping. First, your buyer needs a New Zealand Customs client code, along with a supplier code, for commercial imports valued at a thousand New Zealand dollars or more. Food for sale needs one regardless of value, and so does a motor vehicle regardless of value, which surprises people bringing in a single car. Without it the entry cannot be lodged. Second, biosecurity risk goods have to meet the import health standards set by the Ministry for Primary Industries, and some of those requirements have to be completed in the exporting country before shipment. Used vehicles and machinery must be clean, and they can be inspected on arrival. So on this lane the cleaning and the treatment are our problem in Dubai, not a problem for your buyer in Auckland. Tell us the product and we will set out both.

Documentation
Documents you need
for New Zealand.
These 11 cover most shipments to New Zealand. The exact list depends on the commodity and its HS code, so send us both and we confirm what applies before the cargo is booked.
- 01Invoice showing what you paid for the goods
- 02Packing list showing what is inside
- 03Certificate of origin showing where the goods were made
- 04Bill of lading or air waybill, which is the shipping ticket
- 05Dubai export paper, which we do for you
- 06New Zealand Customs client code for the importer
- 07Supplier code, for imports valued at a thousand dollars or more
- 08Import entry through the Trade Single Window
- 09Biosecurity clearance certificate application, where it applies
- 10Import health standard documentation, where the goods are biosecurity risk
- 11Cleaning or treatment certificate, for relevant used machinery or vehicles
Get the paperwork right in Dubai and clearance at destination is routine. Fixing a document after arrival is slow, and storage accrues the whole time it takes.

Questions
Cargo to New Zealand
questions, answered.
The 14 we are asked most on the Dubai to New Zealand route. If yours is not here, send it with the commodity and we will answer it directly.
How long does shipping from Dubai to New Zealand take?
Sea freight to New Zealand takes about 22 to 28 days to Auckland and 24 to 30 to Tauranga, on current commercial lane information. Air freight is quoted at 1 to 7 days, and that wide range is about whether the goods go on a direct service or a connection rather than the distance. We tell you which one your cargo is on.
What is a customs client code and does my buyer need one?
It is the registration New Zealand Customs uses to identify an importer. Your buyer needs one, along with a supplier code, for commercial imports valued at a thousand New Zealand dollars or more. Food for sale needs one regardless of value, and so does a motor vehicle regardless of value. Without it the entry cannot be lodged, so we confirm it before you book.
I am importing one car. Do I still need a client code?
Yes. A motor vehicle needs a client code regardless of value, so a single personal car is not below any threshold. It catches people out often. We arrange it as part of the job rather than leaving you to find out at the port.
Can you ship a car from Dubai to New Zealand?
Yes. Used vehicles can be imported if they meet New Zealand safety, emissions, entry certification and biosecurity requirements. The vehicle must be clean and can be inspected on arrival, and cleaning is much easier to do properly in Dubai than to fix in Auckland. A client code is needed regardless of value. We could not verify any blanket maximum age. Send us the make, model, year and chassis number.
What does MPI require before shipping?
Biosecurity risk goods have to meet the import health standards set by the Ministry for Primary Industries, and some of those requirements have to be completed in the exporting country before shipment rather than on arrival. Used vehicles and machinery must be clean. That makes the treatment our job in Dubai, which is why we ask about the product before booking.
How much does shipping from Dubai to New Zealand cost?
It depends on what you send, how big it is, and where in New Zealand it is going. We do not publish prices because every shipment is different. Sea freight is priced per container when you fill one, and per cubic metre when you share one. Air freight is priced on weight or size, whichever is greater. Cleaning and treatment, where needed, are quoted up front. Send us the details.
Which cities in New Zealand do you deliver to?
All of them. Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga, Dunedin, Palmerston North, Napier, Hastings, Nelson, Rotorua, New Plymouth, Whangarei, Invercargill, Queenstown and Timaru. For the South Island we land at Lyttelton rather than trucking down from Auckland and across on the ferry.
Auckland or Tauranga?
Auckland for the upper North Island and the largest urban market. Tauranga for the central North Island, Hamilton and a good deal of the inland freight, because its rail and road connections reach further than most people expect. It is about a day or two behind Auckland on the water and often ahead once the inland leg is counted. Tell us the delivery town.
Do you deliver to the South Island?
Yes, and we land there rather than crossing from the North Island. Lyttelton is the primary gateway for Christchurch and much of the South Island, and Christchurch airport handles international cargo directly. Coming in through Auckland and driving south means a ferry crossing that is worth avoiding.
Do you deliver door to door?
Yes. We handle freight forwarding to New Zealand door to door. We collect the goods in Dubai, move them, clear them through customs and biosecurity, and bring them to your address. You deal with one company for the whole journey.
Can I send a small shipment, or do I need a full container?
You can send as little as one box or one pallet. We put small shipments from different customers into one shared container. This is called LCL, or less than container load. Your goods load at Jebel Ali and come into Auckland. When you have more goods, you move up to your own full container, which is called FCL. We will tell you which one is cheaper.
Do you handle customs clearance in New Zealand?
Yes, at both ends, and the biosecurity side as well. We do customs clearance in Dubai, and the import entry plus the MPI requirements at the other end. Customs and biosecurity are separate authorities with separate requirements, and both have to be satisfied.
Can you collect the goods from my supplier in Dubai?
Yes. We collect anywhere in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and the rest of the UAE. We can also hold your goods in warehousing and storage in Dubai until you are ready to ship. On this lane that matters, because any pre-shipment cleaning or treatment can be done while the cargo is with us.
I am moving to New Zealand. Do I get relief on my belongings?
You may, and the timing rule is stricter than most. A household effects concession is available on used goods for people moving permanently, but you generally must have lived outside New Zealand for the full twenty-one months before arrival. A personal vehicle can qualify under a separate concession if you also personally owned and used it overseas for at least a year before departure or shipment. Tell us your dates and we will work back from them.
