RoRo stands for Roll-on Roll-off. Wheeled cargo is driven onto a dedicated vessel deck, secured for the voyage and driven off at arrival. There is no packing, lifting or container to unstuff, which is why handling costs are lower and port turnaround is quicker than containerised shipping.

Anything that rolls and can be driven or towed: cars, 4x4s, vans, pickups, trucks, buses, trailers, and self-propelled machinery such as excavators, tractors and cranes. High and heavy units that exceed container dimensions often move on RoRo for exactly that reason.

For a single running vehicle on a lane with a regular RoRo call, usually yes, because there is no packing, lifting or container handling. For two or more vehicles a container often works out lower per unit, because the container price is shared across the units inside it.

It must be running, steerable, have working brakes, and be free of leaks, because it is driven onto the vessel by a terminal driver. Fuel is normally required to be low. Anything that cannot be driven safely will be refused at the terminal.

Because nothing may be packed inside the unit, any personal effects left in a vehicle are covered by neither, and they are also a customs problem at the far end.
