RoRo is charged per unit based on the vehicle dimensions, while container shipping is charged per container, which makes multiple vehicles cheaper per unit. A single running car is usually cheapest on RoRo, while two or more often justify a container. Finally consider the vehicle. Non running, low clearance, classic or high value cars belong in a container.

For RoRo, yes. The vehicle must be running, steerable and road legal, because it is driven aboard. Non runners can sometimes be handled on a mafi trailer, but that is not available on every service. A container is usually the more practical route for a non runner.

Carriers normally require the tank to be close to empty, commonly around a quarter or less, for fire safety. The exact requirement varies by carrier and service, and it is checked at the terminal, so confirm it before delivering the vehicle for loading.

It depends on the destination port, whether the service is direct or transhipped, and the sailing frequency on that lane, which for RoRo can be less frequent than the container network. Yes. A container shipment tracks on the bill of lading number, and a RoRo unit tracks against the booking and the vessel schedule. We confirm loading, departure and arrival, and send the photographs taken at handover so you have a record of the condition the vehicle left in.

Marine cargo insurance is arranged on request and priced against the declared value of the vehicle. It is worth taking on anything valuable, classic or hard to replace, because carrier liability is limited by convention and is not the same as insuring the car for what it is worth. RoRo liability in particular is lower than most owners expect.

The vehicle has to be deregistered and free of finance and fines before the RTA will issue the export certificate, and the exporter has to be able to prove ownership. You do not have to be in the UAE to do it: a power of attorney lets someone here complete the deregistration and hand the vehicle over on your behalf. What you cannot do is ship a car that is still financed or still registered.

Electric and hybrid vehicles can be shipped, but they are treated as dangerous goods because of the battery, and acceptance depends on the carrier, the state of charge and whether the unit travels in a container or on a RoRo deck. If damage is found on arrival it has to be noted at the point of delivery, before the vehicle leaves the terminal, or the claim becomes very hard to pursue. Where marine insurance is in place the claim goes to the insurer; where it is not, carrier liability applies and it is limited.
