Shipping from Dubai
to Malawi.

We ship from Dubai and from anywhere in the UAE to Malawi by sea and by air. We carry business and personal cargo. Malawi has no coast and four ports to choose from, and the country is actively moving its cargo towards the Nacala railway. That means the best route today may not be the one that was best two years ago, so we check rather than assume.

Overview

Sea, road and air freight
to Malawi.

Malawi has no sea port, so shipping from Dubai works in two stages. Goods sail to Nacala, Beira, Dar es Salaam or Durban, then travel inland to Lilongwe or Blantyre. Nacala is about 14 to 28 days by sea plus one to three weeks inland, and it has a working railway that Malawi has been building up on purpose to cut road costs. Air into Lilongwe is 3 to 8 days. We deliver everywhere, including Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu, Zomba, Mangochi and Karonga. Navo Shipping handles the sea freight, air freight and customs clearance on the Dubai to Malawi route, door to door. Tell us the delivery city and we will compare the routes properly.

Ports and gateways

Ports and airports
we ship to from Dubai.

Every bill of lading carries two ports: where the cargo loads, and where it discharges. We load at Jebel Ali or another UAE port. Malawi is landlocked, so sea cargo discharges at Nacala, Mozambique and travels inland from there. That inland leg is a shipment in its own right, so we plan and price it separately.

  1. POLPort of loading

We collect anywhere in the UAE, free zones included, and load at whichever of these eight suits the cargo.

The right one is whichever leaves the shortest inland leg to your delivery address. On a long lane that leg is a shipment in its own right, so it is planned rather than assumed.

Before you ship

Import rules
for Malawi.

Malawi is lighter than most of the region. The great majority of goods come in under a general arrangement with no specific licence at all. What still needs one is a defined list, and the reasons are stated: security, public health, the environment, and protecting local producers. That last one catches people out, because a completely ordinary product can need a licence purely because Malawi makes something similar. It is a commercial reason rather than a safety one, so you cannot guess it from the nature of the goods. Where a licence is needed it takes a couple of weeks, so tell us early. Goods are also checked against Malawian standards when they arrive.

Documentation

Documents you need
for Malawi.

These 8 cover most shipments to Malawi. The exact list depends on the commodity and its HS code, so send us both and we confirm what applies before the cargo is booked.

  • 01Invoice showing what you paid for the goods
  • 02Packing list showing what is inside
  • 03Certificate of origin showing where the goods were made
  • 04Bill of lading or air waybill, which is the shipping ticket
  • 05Dubai export paper, which we do for you
  • 06Import licence, if your product is on the list
  • 07Technical papers for the standards check on arrival
  • 08Transit papers for the inland leg

Get the paperwork right in Dubai and clearance at destination is routine. Fixing a document after arrival is slow, and storage accrues the whole time it takes.

How it works

Dubai to Malawi
shipping, step by step.

Send the cargo details: what it is, where it is going, rough weight and dimensions. We come back with the routes that suit it, sea against road against air, and a written rate with a validity date on it. You pick one, we book it, and one coordinator stays with the shipment until it is delivered in Malawi.

Questions

Cargo to Malawi
questions, answered.

The 14 we are asked most on the Dubai to Malawi route. If yours is not here, send it with the commodity and we will answer it directly.

How long does shipping from Dubai to Malawi take?

Via Nacala it is about 14 to 28 days by sea plus one to three weeks inland. Via Dar es Salaam it is 8 to 25 days by sea plus a longer road leg south. Air into Lilongwe is 3 to 8 days. We quote both stages separately.

How much does shipping from Dubai to Malawi cost?

It depends on what you send, how big it is, and where in Malawi it is going. We do not publish prices because every shipment is different. Sea freight to Malawi is priced per container when you fill one, and per cubic metre when you share one. Air freight to Malawi is priced on weight or size, whichever is greater. Send us the details and we send you a price in writing, usually the same day.

Which route should I use?

Nacala is increasingly the answer. It has the shortest inland distance, a working railway, and Malawi has leased a terminal there and is deliberately moving cargo to it. Dar es Salaam has the shortest sailing but a long road south. Beira suits Blantyre. Durban is rarely right from Dubai.

Why is the route picture changing?

Because Malawi is changing it on purpose. The country leased a terminal at Nacala and started bringing cargo in by rail specifically to cut the cost of the road based routes. It means a comparison from two years ago is worth redoing rather than inheriting.

Does my product need an import licence?

Probably not. Most goods come in under a general arrangement. Licences are kept for security, public health, environmental and local industry reasons. That last one surprises people, because an ordinary product can need one purely because Malawi makes something similar.

How long does an import licence take?

Around a couple of weeks when the papers are complete. It goes to the responsible ministry with a letter setting out the value, where the goods come from and why. It is a real lead time, so it belongs ahead of the cargo.

Which cities do you deliver to?

Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu, Zomba, Mangochi, Karonga and elsewhere. Tell us the city and we will pick the route and price the inland leg.

Can cargo travel by train?

On the Nacala route, increasingly yes, and that is where the cost saving is compared with road. Availability varies, so it is worth asking specifically rather than assuming. We check what is actually running.

Do you deliver door to door?

Yes. We handle freight forwarding to Malawi door to door. We collect the goods in Dubai, move them, clear them through customs, and bring them to your address. You deal with one company for the whole journey.

Can I send a small shipment, or do I need a full container?

You can send as little as one box or one pallet. We put small shipments from different customers into one shared container. This is called LCL, or less than container load. Your goods load at Jebel Ali and come into Nacala, Mozambique. When you have more goods, you move up to your own full container, which is called FCL. We will tell you which one is cheaper.

Is there a certificate to arrange before shipping?

No. Unlike the West African routes, Malawi checks goods against its standards when they arrive rather than certifying them in Dubai. There is usually nothing for us to obtain here. What helps is having the technical papers complete when the goods land.

Do you handle customs clearance in Malawi?

Yes, at both ends. We handle customs clearance in Dubai and customs clearance in Malawi. You do not need to find your own clearing agent.

Can you collect the goods from my supplier in Dubai?

Yes. We collect anywhere in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and the rest of the UAE. We can also hold your goods in warehousing and storage in Dubai until you are ready to ship. That helps when you are buying from several suppliers and want everything to travel to Nacala, Mozambique in one container.

Can you ship machinery and heavy equipment to Malawi?

Yes. We move project cargo to Malawi as well. Big, heavy items go in open top or flat rack containers, or loose on the ship into Nacala, Mozambique. Send us the size and weight and we will work out the best way to move it.
