Cargo from Dubai to India

How to send cargo from Dubai to India

Sea from Jebel Ali to Nhava Sheva, Mundra or Cochin. Air to Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and more.

The crossing is short, so sea freight stays cheap even for a few pallets.

But two things must already exist on the Indian side before your cargo leaves Dubai. Your buyer's Importer Exporter Code. And BIS registration, if the product needs it.

Neither can be arranged from the UAE. Neither can be fixed once the goods have sailed. And here is the problem: both fail silently. Nothing at the Dubai end will stop you.

IEC and BIS: the two things your buyer must already hold - Cargo from Dubai to India

IEC and BIS: the two things your buyer must already hold

Both are Indian registrations. Both must exist before you load. Neither can be arranged from Dubai.

The Importer Exporter Code

What it is. A registration number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade. Any business importing into India needs one. It ties the shipment to the importer in the customs system.

Why it stops shipments. Without a valid IEC, the customs entry cannot be filed. Not filed late. Not filed at all. Your cargo sits at the port while your buyer sorts out a registration they should have had before ordering.

What to do. Ask for the IEC number before you accept the order. Ask whether it is active. A dormant or suspended registration behaves like no registration. One email prevents an expensive problem.

BIS registration

What it is. The Bureau of Indian Standards runs a Compulsory Registration Scheme covering a defined list of electronic and IT products. Listed products must be registered before they can be imported.

Why this one is harder. Registration is tied to the product and the manufacturer, not to the shipment. It involves testing at a recognised laboratory in India and an application to BIS. This is not a document you get in a week. If your product is on the list and is not registered, the shipment does not happen, and the fix takes months.

Who holds it. The manufacturer or brand owner, not you. So the question is whether the product you are selling is already registered under the brand you are selling it as. A registration held by a different manufacturer for a similar product does not cover you.

What is covered. A defined list of electronics and IT goods, which has expanded over time. Check by product and HS code rather than assuming.

Why both fail silently

Here is the pattern. A shipper in Dubai books freight, loads a container, sails. UAE customs raise nothing, because these are Indian requirements and nothing at the UAE end checks them.

The cargo arrives at Nhava Sheva. Only then does anyone discover the IEC lapsed, or the electronics are not BIS registered.

At that point every option is bad. Storage accrues daily. Re-export costs money and time. And the underlying registration cannot be rushed.

We ask for the IEC at enquiry, before quoting. For electronics we ask whether BIS registration exists for the specific brand and model. If the answer is unclear we say so before you load.

Sea freight from Dubai to India - Cargo from Dubai to India

Sea freight from Dubai to India

The choice that matters is which gateway port, because it sets how far your cargo still has to travel.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Nhava Sheva

India's largest container port, across the harbour from Mumbai. The natural choice for Mumbai, Pune and much of western India, with the deepest service network.

Mundra Port

A major private port in Gujarat with strong rail links running north. For Delhi NCR cargo, Mundra is often better than Nhava Sheva, because the rail corridor is well established.

Other gateways

Kandla, also in Gujarat, handles bulk and containers. Chennai and Kattupalli serve the east. Cochin serves Kerala, which matters for the large Kerala-bound personal effects trade from the UAE. Hazira and Pipavav add Gujarat capacity.

Inland container depots. A container can move under customs bond by rail from the port to an inland container depot and clear there, closer to your buyer. For Delhi NCR this is common practice. It changes where your cargo waits and who handles it.

Customs. Entries are filed electronically through ICEGATE. Your buyer's broker files on their behalf using their IEC.

Air cargo from Dubai to India - Cargo from Dubai to India

Air cargo from Dubai to India

India has more airports taking direct cargo service from Dubai than almost any destination we serve. Your cargo can reach your buyer's city without an internal transfer.

Kempegowda InternationalBLRBengaluru
Rajiv Gandhi InternationalHYDHyderabad
Chennai InternationalMAAChennai
Cochin InternationalCOKKochi
CalicutCCJKozhikode, Kerala

On many lanes air cargo lands at one hub then moves internally. Here you usually fly into the destination city itself. That removes a transfer, a handling point and a delay.

Chargeable weight. Airlines charge for weight or space, whichever is bigger. Space becomes a weight figure: length × width × height in cm ÷ 6000.

What can you ship from Dubai to India?

Most business cargo. Two categories need work done in advance.

For a cargo check, send us: exact description, HS code, maker and brand, country of origin, packed size and weight, your buyer's IEC, and whether the product is BIS-covered.

How much does cargo from Dubai to India cost?

The crossing is short, so freight is often the smaller part. Duty, IGST and the inland leg usually cost more.

MethodPriced by
Sea FCLPer container
Sea LCLPer CBM or per 1,000 kg, whichever is more
AirPer kg of chargeable weight

On top of freight: UAE pickup, export handling, insurance, terminal handling, broker fees, customs duty, IGST, any cess, BIS registration where it applies, port storage, demurrage, and the inland movement.

Duty runs on the assessed value. Indian customs holds valuation references, so a declared value below expected levels gets examined. That is routine rather than an accusation, but it consumes days. Bring a real invoice and evidence of price. Contact us for the current vessel schedule or rate

Worked example

Eight cartons, each 55 × 45 × 40 cm and 14 kg.

  • Volume weight: (55 × 45 × 40) ÷ 6000 = 16.5 kg
  • Real weight: 14 kg
  • You pay on 16.5 kg per carton
  • Total: 132 kg, not 112 kg

That is 18% more than the scale weight, caused by carton shape.

This shows how the price is worked out. It is not what your shipment will cost.

How long does shipping from Dubai to India take?

Among the shortest crossings from the UAE. It rarely decides your delivery date.

We do not publish fixed transit times on this route. Schedules move, and a number that was right last quarter misleads you this one. Send us the cargo details and we will give you a current range from the carrier or consolidator actually carrying it.

Sea LCLJebel Ali → Nhava ShevaContact us to check

What changes it: sailing frequency, LCL cut-offs, whether the declared value is queried, whether the goods are examined, whether BIS or FSSAI clearance is in order, and the inland rail or road movement.

If your product needs BIS registration and does not have it, none of these figures apply.

Kerala is worth a note. It carries an unusually large personal effects and household goods trade from the UAE, and it has its own sea and air gateways rather than depending on Mumbai. If you are sending household goods there, say so at the outset.

Car shipping from Dubai to India

India applies some of the strictest vehicle import rules of any destination we serve, including conditions on specification, testing and which ports may be used.

What we can say: duty on vehicles is high, the rules are enforced strictly, and a vehicle that does not comply cannot be regularised after arrival.

This is not a lane where you buy first and check later.

Cars travel in containers or on RoRo. The vehicle must be clean, empty of personal items, with papers matching the chassis number.

Send us: make, model, year, chassis number, engine size, fuel type, new or used, the market it was built for, the intended port of entry, and your importer's details.

Common delays when shipping to India

The two worst failures happen before the cargo moves, and neither shows up at the Dubai end.

International shipping destination FAQs

What is the best way to send cargo from Dubai to India?

Sea carries most cargo and stays economic even at moderate volumes because the crossing is short. Air suits urgent or compact loads, and India has an unusual advantage: many cities take direct service from Dubai, so cargo for Bengaluru or Kochi does not have to route through Mumbai.

What is an IEC and does my buyer need one?

The Importer Exporter Code is a registration issued by the DGFT. Any business importing into India must have one. Without a valid, active IEC the customs entry cannot be filed at all. Ask for the number before you accept the order, and check it is active.

What is BIS registration and does my product need it?

The Bureau of Indian Standards runs a Compulsory Registration Scheme covering a list of electronic and IT products. Listed products must be registered before import. Registration belongs to the manufacturer or brand, involves testing in India, and takes months. Check by product and HS code rather than assuming.

Which Indian port should my cargo arrive at?

Depends where your buyer is. Nhava Sheva serves Mumbai and western India with the deepest service network. Mundra has strong rail links north and often suits Delhi NCR better. Cochin serves Kerala. Landing far from your buyer adds inland cost that no freight quote includes.

Can I clear my container inland instead of at the port?

Yes. Containers move under customs bond by rail to an inland container depot and clear there, closer to your buyer. For Delhi NCR this is common. It suits inland importers because examination and delivery happen in one place, but it adds a bonded movement and depends on rail capacity.

How long does it take?

The crossing is among the shortest from the UAE and air is measured in hours. Neither usually decides your delivery date. Clearance, any valuation query, and the inland movement generally account for more elapsed time than the journey.

Can I send personal effects and household goods?

Yes, and a substantial part of this lane is exactly that, particularly to Kerala. Customs treats personal effects differently from commercial cargo and it depends on your consignee's circumstances. Say so at the outset. Household goods packed like commercial stock invite commercial treatment.

How much does it cost?

Sea FCL per container, LCL per cubic metre or per 1,000 kg whichever is more, air per kg of chargeable weight. Because the crossing is short, freight is often the smaller part of the total. Duty, IGST and the inland leg usually cost more. Compare landed cost, not freight quotes.

Tell us what you are shipping to India.

Send the goods description, HS code, package count, sizes, weights, UAE pickup address, ready date and your buyer's delivery city. Include their IEC number, and for electronics tell us whether the product is BIS registered. Those two answers prevent the most expensive problems on this route, so we ask for them first.
