Cargo from Dubai to Jordan

Sea, air or road freight to Jordan: how to choose

Jordan is one of the few countries where road freight from Dubai is a real option, not a backup — so you have three choices here, not two.

Air freight. You pay on chargeable weight. Light, bulky goods cost a lot. Nearly all air cargo lands at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman.

LCL sea freight. Good for a few pallets. Your goods share a container with other people's goods. The box is packed in Dubai and opened again in Aqaba. Both steps take time.

FCL sea freight. Good for full loads, building materials and machines. You get the whole container. It is sealed in Dubai and stays shut until customs. Fewer people touch your cargo.

Road freight. A truck leaves the UAE, drives across Saudi Arabia, and enters Jordan at Al Omari, east of Amman. This skips the port. It also skips the 330 km drive north from Aqaba.

What changes the choice: how heavy your cargo is, how bulky it is, how firm your deadline is, whether you deliver in the north or the south, and how the sea route and the Saudi road route are running that week.

To get a proper quote, send us: what the goods are, the HS code, how many packages, the size of each one, the weight, your ready date, the delivery city, and whether the cargo stays in the Aqaba zone or goes into the rest of Jordan.

What can you ship from Dubai to Jordan?

You can ship most normal business cargo from Dubai to Jordan. But some goods need approval from a Jordanian body first, and your consignee gets that approval inside Jordan — you cannot get it in Dubai.

General goods. Household items, tools, furniture and packed goods. These move by LCL, FCL and road.

Building materials and hardware. A big part of this route. Steel, fittings, tiles, bathroom fittings and cables. Many of these must meet Jordanian technical rules.

Machines and spare parts. Send us the make, model, serial number and condition. Used machines get checked more closely than new ones.

Electronics. Anything that sends a radio signal needs approval from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission. That includes routers, radios and remote controls.

Food. The Jordan Food and Drug Administration tests food imports. If your goods fail, they can be refused. You then pay to send them back or destroy them. Label and shelf-life mistakes catch out new shippers more than anything else.

Medicines, medical devices and cosmetics. These must be registered with the JFDA before import.

Chemicals. You need a safety data sheet, the right HS code and usually a permit.

Cars. These have their own rules and clear through the Zarqa Free Zone. See the car shipping section below.

Banned goods. Weapons, ammunition, drugs and adult material. Alcohol is allowed but taxed heavily.

For a cargo check, send us: the exact description, HS code, maker, country of origin, what it is used for, packed size and weight, and where in Jordan it ends up.

Sea freight from Dubai to Jordan: Jebel Ali to Aqaba

Sea cargo from Jebel Ali has only one destination: the Port of Aqaba. There is no second port to compare, so the real questions are the road leg north and the route your ship takes.

Aqaba sits at the top of the Red Sea. The Aqaba Development Corporation owns the port. Containers are handled at the Aqaba Container Terminal, run jointly by ADC and APM Terminals. Bulk, phosphate and industrial cargo use other terminals in the same port.

The route is the part worth knowing. A ship leaves Jebel Ali and sails out of the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz. It rounds the Arabian Peninsula. It then enters the Red Sea through the Bab el-Mandeb strait and turns north. That is two narrow, sensitive sea gates on one trip. Both are affected by events in the region. That can change routes, schedules and surcharges. Contact our team for a current shipment-specific check.

Containers. Standard 20ft and 40ft dry boxes cover most cargo. Ask for high cube, open top, flat rack or reefer at booking, not later.

Customs. Your agent files the entry online through ASYCUDA on the National Trade Window. Only a licensed Jordanian clearing agent can file it. Your consignee needs an importer card from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply. Every entry gets a green, yellow or red channel. Green means papers only. Yellow means a document check. Red means the goods are opened and examined.

The road leg. Amman is about 330 km north along the Desert Highway. There is no container rail service on that route Contact our team for a current shipment-specific check.. So every Amman-bound box travels by truck.

Air cargo from Dubai to Jordan: DXB and DWC to Amman

Air cargo lands at Queen Alia International Airport, about 35 km from Amman. That is the shortest inland leg of any option on this route.

Flights leave from DXB and DWC. DWC carries more freighters. King Hussein International Airport at Aqaba (AQJ) sits inside the zone but handles little cargo Contact our team for a current shipment-specific check..

Chargeable weight, in plain words. An airline charges you for whichever is bigger: what your box weighs, or how much room it takes up. Room is turned into a weight number. You multiply length by width by height in centimetres, then divide by 6000. If that number beats the scale weight, you pay on it. This is why a box of cushions costs far more to fly than a box of bolts the same size.

Packing. Your cargo must be packed well, labelled clearly and described correctly. Dangerous goods need the right paperwork and packing. You cannot book them at short notice.

Customs and delivery. Air shipments clear at the airport customs centre. After that, delivery to Amman, Zarqa or Irbid is quick. Storage charges start fast. Make sure your consignee is ready before the plane lands, not after.

How much does shipping from Dubai to Jordan cost?

Freight is the part you can compare between suppliers. On this route it is often the smaller half of your bill, because duty and tax on the CIF value can cost more than moving the goods.

Air is priced per kilo of chargeable weight. LCL is priced per cubic metre or per 1,000 kg, whichever is more. FCL is a rate per container. Road is a rate per truck, or by weight and size for part loads. Each one has its own surcharges, handling and paperwork fees.

Costs outside the freight rate: pickup in the UAE, export handling, insurance, terminal handling in Aqaba, agent fees, customs duty, General Sales Tax, any Special Sales Tax, lab testing, storage, demurrage and inland delivery.

Duty is worked out on the CIF value. That means the goods, plus insurance, plus freight. So a higher freight cost also raises the value your duty is charged on. Sales tax is then added on top of the CIF value plus the duty. Contact our team for a current shipment-specific check.

Worked example

Air freight. You have six cartons. Each one is 60 × 40 × 50 cm and weighs 18 kg.

  • Size of each carton: 60 × 40 × 50 = 120,000 cm³
  • Volume weight: 120,000 ÷ 6000 = 20 kg
  • Real weight: 18 kg. The bigger number is 20 kg
  • Total chargeable weight: 6 × 20 = 120 kg, not 108 kg

You pay on 120 kg. That is about 11% more than the scale weight. The shape of your boxes caused all of it.

Sea LCL. You have four pallets. Each one is 120 × 100 × 140 cm and weighs 480 kg.

  • Size of each pallet: 1.2 × 1.0 × 1.4 = 1.68 CBM. Total is 6.72 CBM
  • Weight: 4 × 480 = 1,920 kg, or 1.92 tonnes

LCL charges on whichever number is bigger. Here 6.72 beats 1.92, so you pay on size. Stacking the pallets lower would cut your bill. Adding weight to the same footprint would not.

This shows how the price is worked out. It is not what your shipment will cost.

How long does shipping from Dubai to Jordan take?

Air takes days. Road takes days to a week. Sea takes weeks. The sea figure is the least reliable of the three, because the trip depends on two separate waterways.

What changes the real time: the route the ship takes, how often ships sail, LCL cut-off dates, which customs channel you draw, whether your goods get lab tested, queues at Al Haditha and Al Omari, and how fast your consignee's agent files.

Most shippers forget one clock. It runs from the day cargo arrives to the day it is released. Free storage time is short. A consignee who starts the paperwork after the box lands loses more days there than the ship ever saves.

Documents and customs clearance in Jordan

Jordan clears imports online through ASYCUDA on the National Trade Window. Only a licensed Jordanian clearing agent can file the entry, and only for a consignee who holds an importer card.

Papers you need:

  • Commercial invoice, showing the goods, quantity, unit price, total value, currency and Incoterms
  • Packing list, with size and weight per package
  • Bill of lading, air waybill or road consignment note
  • Certificate of origin
  • Your consignee's importer card details and tax number
  • Arabic translation of the invoice where needed Contact our team for a current shipment-specific check.
  • Insurance certificate, if insured
  • Any product approval: JFDA for food, medicine and cosmetics; Telecommunications Regulatory Commission for radio equipment; Ministry of Agriculture for farm goods

HS codes. An HS code is a worldwide product number. It sets your duty rate, your tax, and whether you need a special approval. Get it wrong and you may pay too little duty without meaning to. Send us your product details and we will check the code before you book.

How Jordan checks standards. Jordan has no pre-export certificate scheme like some African countries. JSMO sets the technical rules, and conformity is checked inside Jordan. Customs runs labs at both Amman and Aqaba. So there is nothing to get in Dubai before you ship. But there is a testing window at the other end that can hold your cargo.

Who pays what. Duty, sales tax, agent fees, storage and testing costs fall on the importer of record. Agree who pays what before the goods move.

Shipping through Aqaba: free zone rules and the road north to Amman

Jordan has one seaport, and it sits inside a special economic zone with its own customs rules. So the question that matters is not where your cargo lands. It is where your cargo stops being zone cargo and becomes a Jordanian import.

Most route pages spend their time on which port to pick. Here there is no choice. Jordan's coast is about 27 km long and holds one port. Everything that comes by sea comes to Aqaba. That one fact shapes everything else.

What the zone is. The Aqaba Special Economic Zone started in 2001. ASEZA runs it. ASEZA is the regulator, the local council and the investment authority all at once. Companies registered inside the zone get customs and tax breaks. Those include relief on imported goods and a low flat income tax rate. The zone covers Jordan's whole coast, including the port.

Here is the part that catches people out. Those breaks belong to the zone, not to your cargo. Goods that land at Aqaba and stay in the zone are treated one way. That covers goods for a registered company there, goods for re-export, and goods for processing. Goods that leave the zone and travel north cross into Jordan's national customs area. At that point they are treated as normal imports. The relief does not travel with the box.

So before you book, your consignee needs to answer one clear question. Is this cargo staying in Aqaba, or going to Amman? That answer sets who files what, where the duty falls due, and what your real landed cost is. A shipper in Dubai cannot answer it for the consignee. If you get a vague reply, treat it as a warning and sort it out early.

The road north. Amman is about 330 km up the Desert Highway. There is no container rail service on that route Contact our team for a current shipment-specific check.. So every box for Amman, Zarqa, Irbid or Russeifa travels by truck. That is where most of Jordan's people and business are. Jordan's customs network is built for this. The Customs Department runs customs houses across the country, including at Aqaba and Amman. So an Amman-bound container can travel under customs control and clear nearer its destination. Ask your agent which method they are using. It changes where your cargo waits.

Why the road route from Dubai is a real option. Now compare the two. A ship from Jebel Ali must pass the Strait of Hormuz to leave the Gulf. It must then pass the Bab el-Mandeb strait to enter the Red Sea. That is two chokepoints on one trip. And there is still a 330 km truck run at the end.

The road route crosses no water at all. Trucks leave the UAE at Al Ghuwaifat into Al Batha. They cross Saudi Arabia. They enter Jordan at Al Omari, opposite Al Haditha, about 155 km east of Amman. That crossing is open around the clock. Two southern crossings also exist. Al Mudawwara faces Halat Ammar, and Durra faces Haql near Aqaba, where ASEZA runs the Jordanian side. The road route reaches Amman directly. No port, no unpacking, no inland leg.

For general cargo to Amman, that is a straight comparison. Two sea chokepoints and a long drive at the end, against two land borders and direct delivery. Which one wins depends on your volume, your deadline and how both routes are running. Contact our team for a current shipment-specific check.

To compare them for you, we need your total weight and size, your delivery city, your deadline, and whether the cargo needs temperature control.

Shipping to Amman, Zarqa, Aqaba and other Jordanian cities

Most of Jordan's people and business sit in the north, around Amman, Zarqa and Irbid. The only seaport sits in the far south. So for most deliveries, the inland leg is a real part of the trip.

Cargo from Dubai to Amman

Amman takes the biggest share of cargo on this route. It is the one city where all three methods really compete. By sea, your cargo lands at Aqaba and drives about 330 km north. By air, it lands at Queen Alia International Airport, about 35 km away. By road from Dubai, it arrives through Al Omari, about 155 km east, with no port at all. Amman also holds most of Jordan's clearing agents, importers and warehouses, plus the customs centre for the capital.

Cargo from Dubai to Zarqa

Zarqa matters far more than its size suggests, because the Zarqa Free Zone is where imported used cars are inspected and cleared. It sits north-east of Amman in the same industrial belt. General cargo reaches it the same way Amman cargo does. But if you are shipping a car, Zarqa is not an option — it is the destination. The car goes there for inspection by the Department of Motor Vehicles before it can be registered and released.

Cargo from Dubai to Aqaba

Aqaba is the only Jordanian city where sea cargo arrives with no inland leg, and the only one inside the special economic zone. If your consignee is registered in the zone, this is the simplest destination in the country. Goods arrive, clear, and are delivered locally. Tell us at quote stage if your consignee is zone-registered. It changes the customs treatment described above.

Car shipping from Dubai to Jordan

Check the rules first. Jordan limits how old an imported car can be, and a car that fails the rule cannot be fixed once it arrives. Reports put the limit at five years for permanent import, with diesel cars restricted Contact our team for a current shipment-specific check.. Hybrid and electric cars have had better tax treatment Contact our team for a current shipment-specific check..

The Zarqa Free Zone step. Used cars go to the Zarqa Free Zone. The Department of Motor Vehicles inspects them against Jordanian rules. An Interpol check is also run on the car. Duty is then worked out and the car is registered before release. Contact our team for a current shipment-specific check.

Why the valuation matters. Jordan works out car duty on its own valuation. It looks at the model year, engine size and fitted extras. Your purchase invoice is evidence, not the final word. Budget on their number, not on what you paid.

Temporary entry. You can bring a car in temporarily against a bank guarantee lodged with Customs. The guarantee covers the duty you would otherwise pay. You must then re-export the car or clear it fully before the time runs out. Contact our team for a current shipment-specific check.

How cars travel. Cars go in containers or on RoRo ships. Containers protect better. RoRo can cost less in volume. Either way the car must be clean and empty of personal items. The papers must match the chassis number exactly.

Send us before booking: make, model, year of first registration, chassis number, fuel type, engine size, new or used, and whether the importer is a person or a dealer. If the car is only passing through Jordan, tell us. Transit and import are different customs processes.

Common delays when shipping to Jordan

The costliest delays on this route happen after your cargo arrives, not while it travels. Nearly all of them come from paperwork you could have sorted while the goods were still moving.

Consignee has no importer card. No card, no entry. Check before the goods leave Dubai.

Zone status not decided. Nobody said whether the cargo stays in the Aqaba zone or goes into Jordan. The box waits while people work it out.

Wrong HS code. The code sets duty, tax and approvals at once. One mistake creates three problems.

Value queried. If your declared value looks low, customs will check it. Storage builds up while they do.

Red channel check. A physical examination cannot be predicted when you book. Leave a buffer. Do not promise a date you do not control.

Lab testing. Regulated goods can be tested at Amman or Aqaba. Goods that fail can be refused, and the importer pays.

Missing approval. Radio gear without TRC approval. Food without JFDA clearance. Chemicals without a permit. All of these are obtained inside Jordan and none can be arranged quickly from Dubai.

Food label mistakes. Wrong language, missing shelf-life dates, wrong declarations. A common reason for rejection and one of the easiest to avoid.

Border queues. Al Haditha and Al Omari handle heavy traffic and conditions change.

No truck booked from Aqaba to Amman. The inland leg is a separate job from the sea freight. Confirm it. Do not assume it.

International shipping destination FAQs

What is the best way to ship cargo from Dubai to Jordan?

It depends on your delivery city. For Amman, Zarqa and Irbid, a direct truck through Saudi Arabia often beats sea. It skips the port and the 330 km drive north from Aqaba. For heavy or bulky cargo, and for anything going to Aqaba itself, sea usually costs less. Air suits small, urgent loads.

How much does shipping from Dubai to Jordan cost?

Air is priced on chargeable weight. LCL is priced per cubic metre or per 1,000 kg, whichever is more. FCL is priced per container. Road is priced per truck. On this route the duty and tax bill is often bigger than the freight bill, because duty is charged on the CIF value and sales tax is added on top. Compare landed cost, not freight quotes.

How long does shipping from Dubai to Jordan take?

Air takes days. Road takes days to a week. Sea takes weeks. The sea figure is the least reliable, because the trip from Jebel Ali passes both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb strait. Add customs time and, for sea, the road leg from Aqaba to your city.

Which port does cargo from Dubai arrive at in Jordan?

The Port of Aqaba, and only the Port of Aqaba. It is Jordan's single seaport. Containers are handled at the Aqaba Container Terminal, run jointly by the Aqaba Development Corporation and APM Terminals. There is no other port to compare it with.

Can I send cargo from Dubai to Jordan by road?

Yes. Trucks leave the UAE at Al Ghuwaifat, cross Saudi Arabia, and enter Jordan at Al Omari, opposite Al Haditha. That is about 155 km east of Amman and open around the clock. Road delivers straight to Amman with no port stage, so it is a real alternative to sea, not a backup.

What documents do I need to ship to Jordan?

You need a commercial invoice, a packing list, and a bill of lading or air waybill, plus a certificate of origin. Your consignee needs an importer card from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply and a tax number. Only a licensed Jordanian clearing agent can file the customs entry. Some goods need extra approval.

Does the Aqaba free zone mean I pay no duty?

Not automatically. The zone gives customs relief to companies registered inside it. Goods that leave the zone and move into the rest of Jordan enter the national customs area and are treated as normal imports at that point. Check with your consignee where the cargo ends up before you budget.

Can I ship a car from Dubai to Jordan?

Yes, but you must check Jordan's rules on car age and fuel type first. A car that breaks the rules cannot be fixed after it arrives. Used cars go to the Zarqa Free Zone for inspection by the Department of Motor Vehicles. An Interpol check is run, and duty is worked out on the customs valuation, not on your purchase price.

Tell us what you are shipping to Jordan.

Send us what the goods are, the HS code, how many packages, their size and weight, your UAE pickup address, your delivery city and your ready date. Tell us whether the cargo stays in Aqaba or goes north. Tell us if you want the sea route and the road route priced side by side. On this route, that comparison is worth making before you book.
