How does a truck get from Dubai to Saudi Arabia?
A truck from Dubai drives west through Abu Dhabi, leaves the UAE at Al Ghuwaifat and enters Saudi Arabia at Al Batha. The two border posts are two halves of the same crossing. The truck then drives on to your door: about 1 to 3 days to Dammam, 2 to 4 days to Riyadh and 3 to 5 days to Jeddah in total. Most of the waiting happens at the border, and most of it comes down to paperwork. Get the papers right before the truck loads, and the crossing goes far more smoothly.

The papers to prepare in Dubai
This is the step that decides the rest. Each paper has a simple job.
- Commercial invoice: what the goods are and what the buyer paid
- Packing list: what is in each box or pallet, with the weights
- Certificate of origin: where the goods were made
- SABER certificate: proof the product meets Saudi product rules, needed for most goods
- UAE export declaration: tells UAE customs the goods are leaving
- Saudi import declaration: filed on FASAH, the Saudi customs online system, before the truck arrives
- The buyer commercial registration number, so Saudi customs knows who is importing

We check that every name, number and weight matches across all of these before the truck loads. Food, medicines and cosmetics are regulated by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority. Food, for example, must be registered with it before it is imported. Our Dubai to Saudi Arabia page explains SABER in full.
Leaving the UAE at Al Ghuwaifat
Al Ghuwaifat is the UAE side of the crossing, in the far west of Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi Customs sets the exit steps for trucks here, and explains them in its official notice. We prepare the UAE export paperwork in Dubai, before the truck sets off.
Entering Saudi Arabia at Al Batha
Al Batha is where most of the time goes. Saudi customs checks the import declaration, the SABER certificate and the buyer details. Customs can scan a truck, or open it for an inspection, so the packing list has to match what is really inside. Import VAT, and any customs duty due, is paid here. Who pays is set by the sale terms with the buyer. Once the declaration is cleared, the truck is released into Saudi Arabia.

Trucks are booked into Al Batha through FASAH, which handles truck appointments as well as declarations. When we run the truck, we file the declaration before it leaves Dubai, so it does not arrive with papers still missing. Our customs clearance team handles both sides.
How long does the Saudi border crossing take?
There is no fixed time. A truck that arrives with a complete, matching file can cross in hours. One with a missing certificate or a mismatch can wait a day or more while it is fixed. Queues also build at busy times, and customs can pick any truck for a closer look. That is why we give door-to-door ranges, not a single number.
| Dubai to | Door to door by road |
|---|---|
| Dammam and Al Khobar | 1 to 3 days |
| Riyadh | 2 to 4 days |
| Jeddah | 3 to 5 days |
These ranges come from our August 2026 research into published road transit times, checked with operators running the lane. Our road transit table covers every GCC city.
What usually holds a truck at Al Batha
- A name, address or number that does not match between the papers
- An invoice and a packing list that disagree on quantity or weight
- A product code that does not fit the goods
- A missing or expired SABER certificate
- Food, cosmetics or medicines not registered or listed with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority
- A buyer who is not registered to import
- Goods picked for a physical inspection
Every one of these except the last can be caught in Dubai, before the truck loads. That is the whole point of doing the papers first.
What to do if your truck is held at the border
- Get the exact reason. "Held at customs" is not a reason, but "SABER certificate missing" is
- Fix the paper, then send it through the same system, so it matches what customs already has
- Ask about the clock: waiting time can be charged, so get the fix moving the same day
- Bring in the buyer early, because many fixes need them, such as a registration or an approval in Saudi Arabia
When we run the truck, we do all of this for you and keep you updated until it is through.
Trucks going on to Kuwait, Qatar or Bahrain
A truck for Kuwait, Qatar or Bahrain also enters Saudi Arabia at Al Batha, but it is not imported there. It crosses Saudi Arabia in transit, sealed and under customs control, and is cleared at the next border instead. In 2021, Saudi customs also approved a fast lane at Al Batha for approved TIR transport companies. TIR is an international system for moving goods through countries in transit. Each country page covers the rest of the route: Dubai to Kuwait, Dubai to Qatar and Dubai to Bahrain.
What a truck from Dubai to Saudi Arabia costs
The truck is priced per trip, with the border work and any permits shown as separate lines. Saudi duty and VAT are paid on top. As a guide, other UAE companies publish a full 40ft trailer from Dubai to Riyadh at about USD 1,400 to 2,600, checked in October 2026. That covers the freight only: SABER, unloading, duty and VAT come on top. It is an estimate, not our price, so ask us for a current price on your load. Our price table shows more routes.
Your checklist before booking a truck to Saudi Arabia
- The buyer full name, address and commercial registration number, exactly as registered
- An invoice and packing list that match each other, line by line
- The product code for each item
- A SABER certificate, if your product needs one
- Saudi Food and Drug Authority registration or listing for food, cosmetics or medicines
- The weight and size of the load, and how it will be unloaded
- The delivery address and the date you need it
Send us these and we will check them, price the truck and tell you the realistic delivery window. Navo Shipping is a shipping company in Dubai, and our GCC land transport team runs Dubai to Saudi Arabia by truck, from your warehouse to the door.
This guide explains official rules in plain words. The authority's own notice is always the final word, and we confirm the rules for your shipment when you book.
Frequently asked questions
What is FASAH?
FASAH is the Saudi customs online system, part of the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority. Traders use it for customs services and payments, and to track a shipment through customs.
Do I need to be at the border when my truck crosses?
No. The driver and the customs agents on each side handle the crossing. Your part is making sure the buyer details and the papers are right before the truck loads.
Who pays Saudi customs duty and VAT?
It depends on the sale terms you agree with the buyer. Under DAP, delivered at place, the buyer pays the import VAT and any duty due on arrival. Under DDP, delivered duty paid, the seller pays them. Agree this before you ship, because the truck cannot clear until someone pays.
Why does a truck to Jeddah take longer than one to Dammam?
Because of the drive inside Saudi Arabia. Dammam and Al Khobar are in the Eastern Province, which begins just past the border. Jeddah is on the Red Sea, right across the country. For very heavy cargo going to Jeddah, sea can be worth comparing.
Can I send a part load, or do I need a full truck?
You can send a part load, which shares a truck with goods from other customers. You pay only for your space, but the truck leaves on a shared schedule and makes other stops. For a fixed delivery date, a full truck is the safer choice.
What is an HS code?
It is the number customs uses to identify a product, and it sets the duty and the rules that apply. We put the same code on the invoice and the declaration, so they match. A code that does not fit the goods can mean the wrong duty, or a truck held while it is checked.
What is a commercial registration number?
It is the official registration number of a Saudi business. Saudi customs uses it to identify the importer. The buyer gives it to you, and it has to match their name on every paper.
Can I send personal belongings by truck to Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Household goods can travel by road too. The paperwork differs from business cargo: customs will want the owner ID details and a list of what is inside. Tell us you are moving home and we will check what applies.
Can the goods wait in Dubai until the buyer is ready?
Yes. We can hold them in our Dubai warehouse and send the truck when the buyer and the papers are ready. Waiting in Dubai is safer than waiting at the border.
How will I know when my truck has crossed?
We tell you when the truck reaches Al Ghuwaifat, when it clears Al Batha and when it delivers. The Al Batha update is the one that matters most, because that is where the time goes.
